Your only bondage is mistaking the witness for something else
You are the one witness of everything — and you are always already free. Your bondage is only this: you take the witness to be something other than itself.
What this verse points to
The verse locates bondage in a single specific error rather than in accumulated conditioning. Nothing needs to be dismantled over years; one misidentification is doing all the work.
This is the characteristic move of the text, and it is genuinely difficult to receive. Most people find it easier to accept a long programme of purification than to entertain that they are already free and simply not noticing.
Sit with it
Instead of trying to become free during your sit, look for what is currently preventing it. Look carefully.
About the Ashtavakra Gita
A dialogue between the sage Ashtavakra and King Janaka that dispenses almost entirely with practice and preparation, addressing the student as already free. It is among the most uncompromisingly non-dual texts in the tradition — where other scriptures prescribe a path, it mostly removes the assumption that one is needed.
