Shiva Sutras 1.1

Chaitanyam atma — consciousness is the Self

चैतन्यमात्मा॥

Consciousness is the Self.

Shiva Sutras — Vasugupta 1.1Self

What this verse points to

The opening aphorism of Kashmir Shaivism, and the choice of word matters. Chaitanya is consciousness as active and self-aware, not as a passive screen on which things appear.

That emphasis distinguishes this tradition from the more world-negating strands of Advaita. Here consciousness is doing something, and the world is what it does.

Sit with it

Notice awareness not as a still background but as something alive and already in motion.

About the Shiva Sutras

Seventy-seven aphorisms that form the foundational text of Kashmir Shaivism, traditionally held to have been revealed to the sage Vasugupta. Unlike the world-negating strand of Advaita, this tradition treats the manifest world as the play of consciousness rather than an appearance to be discounted.
