Kashmir Shaivism · revealed to Vasugupta
Shiva Sutras 1.5
Udyamo bhairavah — the creative pulse is the divine
उद्यमो भैरवः॥
The creative pulsation of awareness is the Divine. Not a god outside, but the very throb of consciousness recognizing its own nature.
What this verse points to
Udyama means a surge, an upward burst — the instant in which awareness flares into recognition of itself. The sutra identifies that flash with Bhairava, which is to say with the absolute.
This locates the divine in an event rather than an entity, and in an event that is available now rather than at the end of a practice.
Sit with it
Catch the moment of waking up from distraction. Do not correct it — attend to the quality of the flash itself.
About the Shiva Sutras
Seventy-seven aphorisms that form the foundational text of Kashmir Shaivism, traditionally held to have been revealed to the sage Vasugupta. Unlike the world-negating strand of Advaita, this tradition treats the manifest world as the play of consciousness rather than an appearance to be discounted.
